Digitalization in the die and mould sector: Practical added value

Digitization is THE management catchphrase in engineering. The main question facing companies is how their own analogue products can be integrated in the new digital world – a process that might not always be voluntary but is certainly necessary to ensure future requirements can be fulfilled and to uphold or even expand a company’s competitive ability.

In 2017, the Ceratizit Group, a leading manufacturer of precision tools, asked exactly the same question. Initially, the answer was amazingly simple: “Unique product marking was and is the basis that we need for connecting up with every kind of digital and mobile services. For us, this is the logical first step on the way to the smart product”, explains Jochen Metschke, Project Manager Industrie 4.0 at Ceratizit.

With the aim of enhancing efficacy and efficiency as well as assisting their own processes and those of customers and service providers, a process was established for unique marking of the drills, milling cutters etc. Since then, tools are lasered with a two-dimensional GS1 data matrix code for unique identification, also linking the tool with specific data, processes and services.

Working together with oneIDentity+ GmbH, Ceratizit used the serialized marking as the basis for devising and implementing various services
which were then made available to the stakeholders in the value adding chain. Here oneIDentity+ offers a cloud service platform for digital management of products, together with flexible, role-based orchestration of various services. The provision of serialized numbers via standardized
interfaces or comprehensive reports via scans for analyzing the flow of goods are just two of the many other functionalities provided by the
platform.

Since 2018, it is now also possible for instance to call up product data with a smart phone app; records can be kept of regrinding processes and
test reports can be linked in digitally, all on the basis of a dedicated rights and role system with one central access point: oneIDentity+. Product digitalization opens up possibilities for optimizing many business processes and models in the future.

“A Place of Excellence in the Land of Ideas 2018“: Schaeffler awarded for the Orig-inCheckApp against product piracy – Application uses the cloud service platform by oneIDentity+

Cologne – The globally active automotive and industry supplier Schaeffler was honored in the Bavarian State Chancellery as the winner of the competition “A Place of Excellence in the Land of Ideas 2018“, an initiative of the German government and the German industry. At the center of attention was the “OriginCheck App”, which uses the oneIDentity+ cloud service platform to check the originality of Schaeffler products. Using the “OriginCheck App“, customers of INA and FAG products, such as antifriction bearings, can quickly and easily perform an initial authenticity check and initiate further steps for a definite clarification if any suspicions arise. Thus, in the eyes of the jury, the app combats product piracy and increases the protection against fake and possibly harmful products for the public good.

The basis for the check is the unique labelling of Schaeffler packages with data matrix codes (DMC) according to GS1 standards, which globally identify products without overlap as well as the corresponding “OriginCheck App“. The user scans the DMC with the app and promptly receives the response whether the code is stored on the oneIDentity+ cloud service platform and is marked as a valid code. In case of suspicion, the app appropriately supports the user with the creation of photo documentation of the checked product, by directly sending an e-mail to the brand protection team, the central unit for the fight against counterfeiting and piracy at Schaeffler. The DMC is stored in the cloud service platform, developed by the TecAlliance subsidiary oneIDentity+. Nowadays, the oneIDentity+ database comprises over 2 billion product codes mostly from the automotive aftermarket. From 90 countries around the world, the authenticity verification specialist receives enquiries about products, machines and facilities from a wide range of user groups including workshops, customs, service and logistics employees. “The oneIDentity+ service platform enables the global and central provision of our unique DMCs. Due to the flexible applications and expansion capabilities we are able to include additional services, besides the protection of our products, thus being well prepared for future challenges of digitalization,” Ingrid Bichelmeir-Böhn, head of the global brand protection team, describes the benefits created by using oneIDentity+.

Goods worth about 5 million Euros in purchase value secured

In 2017 Schaffler examined over 700 suspected cases of product piracy, which were, among other things, reported via the OriginCheck App. In this way, goods worth about 5 million Euros in purchase value were secured and destroyed all around the world. The app offers customers and retailers the possibility to better evaluate the source of often safety-relevant parts and increasingly supports with detecting suppliers of counterfeits. On the occasion of the award ceremony, Dr. Daniel Dünnebacke, the COO of oneIDentity+, sent his best regards: “We congratulate Schaeffler for winning the award as part of the federal initiative and are very happy, that we have been able to play a part in this success.” The “OriginCheck” app was among 100 chosen ideas as part of “A Place of Excellence in the Land of Ideas 2018”.

MAPP initiative relies on oneIDentity+

The industry initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) was founded by members of the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) in order to combat product piracy and to exchange knowledge about product and brand protection. Within the framework of this initiative, some of the members have launched the site www.mapp-code.com to raise awareness of the issue among market participants and to inform them of how genuine parts can be clearly identified. 

As a measure to enable more rapid distinction of real products from counterfeit ones in the future, several participants in the “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) initiative are marking their original products with a GS1-compliant data-matrix code (a standardised two-dimensional bar code). This is based on an encoding recommendation developed by CLEPA. This unique MAPP code can be easily checked using oneIDentity+ (formerly TecIdentify), the first IT-based standard solution for the automotive spare parts market. In a matter of seconds the user knows whether he or she is holding a genuine spare part.

The exclusive use of genuine parts increases road safety. Counterfeit spare parts cause significant damage to the automotive sector of the economy every year. The European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) estimates that counterfeit car parts cost suppliers between five and ten billion euros every year.

It is not just about the money (an estimated 5-10 billion euros in lost revenue to manufacturers). Counterfeit products not only cause lost revenue to automotive suppliers. Unsafe products also pose a considerable safety risk to car drivers.
