Initial situation

Despite all the current turbulence, the automotive sector forms the backbone of the German economy. The knowledge that original spare parts from Germany stand for durability, quality and safety makes these products sought after all over the world. For this reason, Germans in particular, but also other original manufacturers, are suffering from increasing counterfeiting and plagiarism. The involvement of customers and workshops to identify counterfeit products, as well as the mobile and itemized provision of digital services, is an important item on the digital agenda of manufacturers.

Manufacturers against Product Piracy

Automotive suppliers support initiative against product piracy

Counterfeit spare parts cause considerable damage to the automotive industry and the economy every year. The European umbrella organization of the automotive supply industry, CLEPA, estimates that counterfeit car parts cost the supply industry between five and ten billion euros every year. It’s not just about the money. While counterfeit products mean a loss of revenue for automotive suppliers, unsafe products pose a significant safety risk to motorists.

The industry initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) was founded by members of the European umbrella organization of automotive suppliers (CLEPA) to combat product piracy and share knowledge about product and brand protection. The aim of the initiative is to raise market participants’ awareness of the issue and to provide information on how original parts can be clearly identified.

As a measure to be able to distinguish genuine from counterfeit products more quickly in the future, several participants in the “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) initiative mark their original products with a DataMatrix barcode based on a coding recommendation developed by CLEPA or with a serialized QR code. This unique MAPP code can be easily verified with oneIDentity+, the first IT-based standard solution for the automotive aftermarket industry. In seconds, the user knows whether it is an original spare part.
